Las siguientes son algunas de las razones que es difícil comunicarse en español:

• La gente habla rápido, utiliza mucha jerga y tiene acentos diferentes.
• Mis capacidades de escuchar y hablar eran menores que las de leer y escribir.
• La mayoría de los programas de habla hispana no ofrecen subtítulos en inglés ni español.
• Muchos diccionarios no ofrecen ejemplos para entender la utilización específica de cada palabra.
• Se habla castellano.

Aquí hay algunas sugerencias a fin de que su experiencia con el español les resulte más fácil. Les recomiendo que:

• Practiquen diariamente las 4 habilidades comunicativas (escuchar, hablar, leer y escribir).
• Pasen su tiempo con la gente local (p. ej., hagan amistades, asistan a clases, hagan voluntariados y participen en actividades).
• Hagan lo todo en español (p. ej., cambien los idiomas de sus celulares y computadoras a español).
• Aumenten su comprensión de las palabras y frases que se utilizan en Colombia, incluyendo la jerga. Después de todo, están en Colombia, no en España, y cada país es único.
• Aprendan lo necesario de castellano (p. ej., en general, se pronuncia la “ll” y la “y” en castellano lo mismo que se pronuncia la “j” en inglés; y, “vos” puede ser un sustituto de “tú”). 
• Pidan ayuda cuando no entiendan algo. 
• Tengan paciencia. El tiempo todo lo cura.
